Act One
Bernardo, a rich young libertine abducts Dianne (La Puttanesca) and sets her up in bordello. He abandons her with child, to the clutches of the bordello owner who advertises her publicly on a balcony, where her father sees her, denounces her and throws muck at her. Despondent, Dianne flees to the Church and swears vengeance on Bernardo for bringing her to this state (aria: Non so le tetre).

Act Two
Seeking solace, Dianne takes the veil and enters the convent of San Sebastiano del Cruce. Bernardo, now a Captain of the Army, enraged, desecrates the Convent and burns it to the ground. Whilst the flames encroach on the Chapel, Dianne sings the famous prayer.

Alfonso, Bernardo's brother, rescues her and returns her to the care of her former maid, Isabeau.

Act Three
Ensconced in her fathers house, Dianne realises she is dying of consumption and is reunited with her father. At her funeral, Bernardo, filled with remorse, flings himself on the catafalque and expires as the nuns sing the "Salve Regina".

To hear the sublime aria, you will need the Real Media Player, obtainable HERE.
