About the Tests

Before you can drive a car you need to be 17 years old. A Provisional Licence is required, but you can apply for it up to three months before your 17th birthday. To get a licence go to your local Post Office. The forms you require are a D1 and the new Photo-licence Application Form D750. Full details available HERE.

Instruction

I recommend professional instruction. You can also practise in another vehicle if

  • You are accompanied by someone who is at least 21 years old.
  • They have had a full driving licence for at least 3 years.
  • You display 'L' plates at the front and rear of the car.
  • If you are not learning in a Driving School car you will require insurance cover.

To get a full Driving Licence you need to pass both your Theory and Practical tests.

The Theory Test

  • You need to pass the Theory before you can book and take the Practical test.
  • There are 2 sections in the Theory test and you must pass both.
  • Tuition for the Practical can start at any time, as long as you have a Provisional Licence.
  • The Theory test is taken on a touch-screen computer system.
  • You need to be fully prepared for both parts of the Theory test.
  • The test will last for 40 minutes, and there is a 15 minute practice session you can work through before starting the test.
  • The current cost of the Theory test is £21.00 and you can download a booking form HERE.
  • The first part of the Theory test consists of 35 multiple choice questions. You must answer at least 30 correctly to pass.
  • The second part of the Theory test is the ...

Hazard Perception Test

  • This is the second section of the Theory test and must be passed at the same time.
  • There are 14 video clips, each lasting about a minute.
  • The clip will feature various types of hazard e.g. road conditions, other vehicles, pedestrians etc.
  • The earlier you spot a hazard developing that may require some action, the higher the score.
  • You can score up to 5 points on each hazard, and need a score of 44 out of a possible 75 to pass.

The Practical Test

  • You may only apply for the Practical test once you have passed the theory.
  • You won't be tested on all the manoeuvres and there is random testing of the emergency stop.
  • 16 or more minor faults and/or ANY serious/dangerous fault will result in test failure.
  • A show me/tell me element has been added to the test where you will be asked about car maintenance.
  • A weekday test currently costs £45.50 and an evening or weekend test costs £55.00.

It is my job to help you through all aspects of the tests and make sure that you are fully prepared and totally confident. Get in touch now to make a start!
